Founded in 1953, China Academy of Building Research (CABR) used to be affiliated to the Ministry of Construction. Since the year 2000, it has transferred from a public research institution into a technology-based enterprise, affiliated to the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC). CABR is now the largest comprehensive R&D institution in the building industry of China. CABR is one of the authorized institutions in the building industry to confer PhD degrees and Master degrees, with a post-doctoral program for civil engineering. It has a large number of high-caliber personnel including academicians of China Academy of Engineering and China Academy of Science, design masters, hundreds of well-known experts in various fields of the building industry, and young and middle-aged technical talents. CABR has always taken it as its responsibility to serve for the public good and promote the technological development of the building sector. Targeting at building engineering and focusing on application and development research, CABR is committed to solving key technical problems encountered in engineering construction, takes in charge of the development and management of main technical standards and codes, carries out research on common, basic and public technologies needed in the building sector, and exercises quality supervision and test of engineering construction, ir-conditioning equipment, solar water heaters, elevators, chemical building materials, and building energy efficiency. CABR’s research and business covers 70 fields of such specialties as building structure, soil foundation, earthquake-resistance engineering, building environment and energy efficiency, building software, construction mechanization, building fire-prevention, construction technology and building material. In recent years, CABR has put more efforts to research and development of technologies concerning green buildings, new energy applications, disaster prevention and mitigation, and intelligent integration. CABR has established two R&D bases in Beijing and Langfang, and Beijing Tongzhou Base has the State Key Laboratory of Building Safety and Environment with labs of earthquake engineering, curtain walls, wind tunnels, fire prevention, building materials, building environment and energy efficiency. Over the past?60 years, CABR has made great contributions to the scientific and technological advancement of China’s building industry with its remarkable achievements.Since its transformation into a technology-based enterprise, CABR has become market-oriented and has been committed to the research and development of new technologies and products with the full support of technologies and more efforts into innovation. Giving full play to its comprehensive advantages of technologies, CABR has realized constant growth in technology, economic benefits and overall strength and has formed a diversified development pattern with the integration of scientific research and standards, building engineering consultancy and services, planning and building designs, construction and supervision, engineering inspection and product certification, software and IT applications for the building sector, and building materials and manufacture of special-purpose equipment. In this new historical period, abiding by its core values of “contribution to society, pursuit of lead, promotion of quality, and development in harmony” and its management tenet of “integrity, cooperation, innovation and benefit”, CABR will continue to improve its core competitive strength, raise its position and play a more important role in the building sector, and strive to become a leader in the scientific and technological development of China’s building industry.
